There are many advantages to supplementing your analytical calculations with FE simulations. Firstly, you keep costs down, because you know precisely where you can save on materials and where extra strength is needed. Secondly, you strengthen your green profile by not producing more than necessary, and thirdly, the process surrounding CE marking becomes significantly easier.<\/p>\n

FE simulation is a broad term for a range of different calculations. You can therefore find a useful simulation method for almost any type of analysis you need.<\/p>\n

The most frequent type of simulation is used to assess the strength of a component \u2013 that is, how much load the product can withstand \u2013 but simulations can also provide insight into heat resistance or how many times and how much a component can be bent before it breaks.<\/p>\n

Regardless of the purpose, there are often savings to be made because you don't use an unnecessary amount of materials along the way. You also save money on the subsequent CE marking process, and on top of that, there are savings related to the handling and storage of the product.<\/p>\n

If we are talking about a tow rope of, for example, 100 metres, it is quite crucial for handling if you have cut several tonnes off the total weight.<\/p>\n

Uncertainty and overconsumption<\/strong><\/h3>\n

We've actually run simulations on exactly that kind of promise yoke. A proper beast, which should be able to carry a wind turbine blade.<\/p>\n

For to be CE-marked, this type of lifting beam must be able to bear twice the intended load. However, by exclusively using analytical calculations, the uncertainties become so large that the beam is produced to bear perhaps five times as much, because the structure and the loads are so complex. In addition, it requires significantly more engineering hours to carry out the entire task using only analytical calculations.<\/p>\n

FE-simulations, on the other hand, enable us to account for the structure's complexity and accurately assess how much load will be placed on the different components of the lifting yoke. This way, material consumption also becomes far more precise.<\/p>\n

The result in the example was also palpable.<\/p>\n

Our working time came to 30,000 kroner, but because the simulation made the calculations so much more precise, it resulted in material savings of over 100,000 kroner.<\/p>\n

Besides the yoke being able to be CE-marked, there was thus also a considerable saving to be made, simply by making the calculations more precise.<\/p>\n

Never blindly trust your results<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Although there are many advantages to FE simulations, we must not forget the disadvantages. The biggest danger is undoubtedly the tendency to blindly trust the results.<\/p>\n

Not necessarily because the results of the simulation are incorrect, but because we also cannot provide a perfect picture of the reality the product will have to endure with FE simulations.<\/p>\n

Although simulations come much closer to the real usage situation than analytical calculations, it will always be risky to get too close to the limit values.<\/p>\n

In real-world usage scenarios, there are infinitely many parameters that influence an item's strength and load-bearing capacity. Taking the lifting yoke as an example again, factors such as wind and weather conditions on the day, storage temperature, and any impacts during transport will affect the actual load-bearing capacity.<\/p>\n

Therefore, in simulations, you must also ensure that you stay on the safe side of estimates. Do not be tempted to go right to the edge, but still maintain a good distance from the durability limit.<\/p>\n

The difference between simulations and manual calculations is, of course, simply that the limit values are significantly closer to the actual durability, and therefore you do not need to apply an unnecessarily high safety factor.<\/p>\n

The optimal combination<\/strong><\/h3>\n

FEA simulation is a tool, just like analytical calculations; one does not preclude the other. A skilled engineer knows which tool is best suited to which tasks and thus avoids hammering in nails with a spirit level.<\/p>\n

It is important to remember that FE simulations cannot stand alone. To verify a design, you should always use at least two of the following three methods to cross-check your analyses:<\/p>\n

  • Test<\/li>\n
  • FE simulation<\/li>\n
  • Analytical calculation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Sustainable savings<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Although FE simulation isn't always the optimal tool, considerable savings can often be made by using simulation when developing new products.<\/p>\n

    You save a lot of physical tests and prototypes, which would otherwise have been costly, you avoid unnecessarily heavy and large machines, and you get a much faster process when the product needs to be CE-marked.<\/p>\n

    Whether it's load-bearing capacity, heat resistance, fatigue, or something else entirely, simulations can provide you with concrete answers that you can refer to when designing your solutions.<\/p>\n

    If we are talking about products that are to be produced in more than one copy, or even mass-produced, then it is self-evident that the savings will be even greater \u2013 and that the climate impact will be correspondingly reduced significantly.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
