CE marking

Your access to the European market

You may not market or sell your machine in the EU or Turkey unless it has a CE marking, where you, as the manufacturer, declare that it complies with the legislation in force.
You also need to CE mark if you:
  • Manufactures machinery for own use
  • Changes the product or connects multiple machines
  • Importing used or new machinery from countries outside the EU
In practice, this means that your product must meet various requirements, and that you must prepare diverse documentation, including a technical file, a declaration of conformity, a risk assessment and an operating manual.
Machinery

More than machines

You must have a CE marking regardless of which of the areas here your product falls under:
  • Machinery
  • Face masks
  • Interchangeable equipment
  • Hoisting and lifting accessories
  • Chains, ropes and straps
  • Safety components
  • Removable drive shafts

Machinery Directive

All machinery and equipment put into service after 1995 is covered by the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, including the requirement for CE marking.
You will also often need to consider several other directives, for example:
  • PED (Pressure Equipment Directive)
  • The Low Voltage Directive and the EMC Directive (Electromagnetic Compatibility)
  • The ATEX Directives (94/9/EC equipment and 1999/92/EC work in EX areas)
Machinery and plant from before 1995, as well as machinery not covered by the Machinery Directive, must still be subject to a safety assessment and have an operating manual prepared. This is a requirement according to the Danish Working Environment Authority's executive order on the design of technical aids.

”Rosenstand told us precisely what you can and cannot do.”

With Christian Olsen having developed his first prototype of an intelligent welding machine and secured a few investment lions, he and partner Kevin Christensen were ready to take on the world with their company WeldingDroid.

But they were missing some critical elements, including the CE marking that the EU requires before you can market your machinery on the European market.

”Rosenstand Engineering helped us CE mark our prototype, and although that sounds simple, I must admit it actually gave us some food for thought, says Kevin Christensen.

The many CE requirements can easily cause headaches, but the proposed amendments were well received.

“That was great because Rosenstand could tell us exactly what you can and can't do, and what you can and should do to ensure the machine meets the necessary standards.”

WeldingDroid has since grown into an international company with sales to industry in both the USA and Europe.

For example, Rosenstand asked us to install an emergency stop, which we hadn't really thought of.

Who is responsible for CE marking?

It is your responsibility if you, as a manufacturer, lack a label.
However, in a number of cases, the end-user is also considered the manufacturer and therefore assumes the responsibility. This applies if:
  • The end-user has implemented its own management system
  • Older machines without a declaration of conformity are included in the plant
  • Deliveries of individually functioning single machines are included in the plant

How to get started

Before we can prepare a quote, we need a range of information.
  • CE marking is not required for which equipment?
  • How much of the process would you like help with?
  • What documentation do you have?
As a rule, we also like to visit the production.
